On September 1 at 6:30 PM, the Oklahoma Sooners face the
Houston Cougars on Sunday night football. College football season - the real most
wonderful time of the year - truly begins.
Yes I understand, the college football season officially
begins 8 days earlier on August 24th with Florida Vs Miami. But for Sooners
fans like myself, college football season doesn’t start until Oklahoma plays
their first game and I can finally shout the war cry that is “Boomer Sooner.”
The cry resounds through the stadium and rang through the
streets in Norman, Oklahoma. Indeed, if you walk outside of your home on any
given Sunday during football season, there’s a good chance that you’ll hear at
least 10 “Boomer Sooner” cries shouted at you, at which point - if you value
your dignity and possibly your life - you better shout it back.
Here are the proper options for responding to the “Boomer
Sooner” war cry.
When you see someone wearing any memorabilia or sporting a
bumper sticker on their car or anything else.
Boomer response #1:
You simply shout “Boomer Sooner” at the top of your lungs.
If the person is a true fan, they will promptly and loudly
respond with “boomer sooner” If they do not, then glare at them until it
becomes uncomfortable, flash the horns down hand signal and move on, for they
are beyond your help.
Boomer response #2:
“Boomer Sooner, baby”.
Some hold the
belief that adding the word “baby” at the end gives it more power and
dominance. (This is my dad’s preferred response.)
Boomer Response #3:
This one is very important, and requires
participation from both parties.
You shout: “Boomer!”
The other person will shout back: “Sooner!”
This boomer response is the ultimate test of fandom, for it
pressures the person to respond correctly.
If you are wearing a piece of OU
apparel and someone shouts “Boomer!” at you, then it is your duty, your
responsibility and your privilege to respond properly and loudly with “Sooner!”
Case in point:
Last Christmas when my parents were in town, we all decided
to go to Crown Center. We were walking around the extremely crowded shopping
venue. My father of course, was clothed in an OU sweatshirt. Someone from
several feet away just happened to be wearing an OU shirt as well.
My Dad immediately shouted “Boomer Sooner, baby.”
The man looked somewhat puzzled and slightly scared of the
large strange man in the red sweat shirt yelling at him, but he still responded
with the proper “Boomer Sooner!” and continued on.
Our duty had been performed.
Alright, you have been taught the rules and they are not
hard.
Now, can I get a Boomer Sooner???
