On Thursday, July 26, in St. Joseph, Missouri, the Chiefs’
training camp opened to the public.
A homing missal flew from the sure and steady hands of
rookie QB, Patrick Mahomes in the form of a breezy 60 yard post route that
connected with wide out Sammy Watkins in an over the shoulder catch that
resulted in a touchdown as easy as you please, eliciting the largest cheers
from the fans gathered at Missouri Western State University that day and
signifying the triumphant return of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Yes my friends.
Whether it was Anthony “The Sausage” Sherman showing up to
training camp in an American flag wrestling outfit, or Sammy Watkins chopping
off his signature dreadlocks to show he is all business, there can be no doubt,
that after an eventful off-season, Andy Reid and the Chiefs are back!
Let’s take a brief look at some of the highlights so far.
No matter how much it was talked about in the off-season, it
cannot be overstated just how downright dangerous this Chiefs’ offense is
looking. The 60 yard reception on a post route by Watkins is just one of
several offensive plays that would have easily made the highlight real in the
regular season.
Mahomes’s arm continues to be a thing of beauty, as is
demonstrated in a 60 yard pass on a go route to Tyreek “The Cheetah” Hill, with
the throw looking like it didn’t even cause Mahomes to break a sweat. Not all
beautiful passes are deep balls shot out of the Mahomes cannon however, as is
shown in a floating 15 yarder to tight end Travis Kelse with defenders baring
down on Mahomes, forcing a short yet beautiful pass.
The defensive side of the ball has shined as well, with the
defense actually winning the training contest on Sunday. The wet soggy practice
field would turn into an absolute pick fest. The picks began flying when a pass
to Chris Conley was broken up by veteran cornerback Kendall Fuller, which
resulted in the football being sent in the direction of Steven Nelson by linebacker
Anthony Hitchens, becoming the first pick of Mahomes. Linebacker Ukeme
Eligwe would pick off Chad Henne in 7-on-7 and capping off a stellar day for
the Chiefs D, was Tanoh Kpassagnon, with yet another pick of Mahomes.
All these glimpses into the Chiefs immediate future, and
with Chris Jones stating he wants to lead the league in sacks this season, the
Chiefs first preseason game on august 9, cannot come quick enough, when the
Texans come to arrowhead, where the loudest fans in the NFL will be waiting.
On Tuesday, August 6, the Blind Quarterback will get a
chance to be at practice! Stay tuned!
