When Voice of the Chiefs, Mitch Holthus, refers to #76 right
guard, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, as “The Canadian Doctor”, this is not merely a
creative nickname. Duvernay-Tardif (LDT) has recently accomplished what no NFL player
before him has done - finishing his medical degree, while playing professional
football. This begs the question…
How?
LDT grew up in Montreal, Canada and played college football
for McGill University. He balanced college football with his studies in
medicine, until he was drafted with the 200 overall pick in the sixth round of
the 2014 NFL draft by the Chiefs. During his Chiefs career at right guard, he
would still continue his medical studies - even studying for an exam while on a
flight returning from London after an overseas 45-10 victory against the
Detroit Lions in 2015.
Finally, in May 2018, he would achieve his goal becoming the
first active player in the NFL to become a doctor while playing professional
football. LTD has also been working with the Shockbox, hoping that his work
will help to lower the rate of concussions in football.
When asked what is next for Right guard/Doctor Laurent
Duvernay-Tardif, he simply responded:
“I’m a doctor, and that’s good enough for
now, but eventually I would like to become an emergency physician, but that is
another five years of school.”
Let’s hope that LDT will appear in a super bowl before he
appears in an emergency room. Now, will the NFL allow him to have his “MD” put
on the back of his Jersey?
This blogger votes yes, and I would be first
in line to buy the autographed version.
